A Monkey’s Web

The play opens with Amalthia, a ghost who has learnt, after dying, that evil doesn’t work. She clarifies the story for us throughout the play, whilst lamenting her inability to change things now she is dead.

Alex enters with his father, Flint who is a legendary broadsword wielder and is always thirsty for blood and a battle. His dad has a sparring partner, who is a half man – half ant. This ant-man is called Thorn and has two giant gerbil/hamster minions.

The Monkey’s Web is spun by Monkey-Wunkey, the monkey shape shifter. She is the evil presence in the jungle.

Alex makes friends with a dragon called Spitfire, who in turn meets an explorer called Nicola. Nicola inadvertently manages to help Flint find his ‘good’ side. Monkey-Wunkey turns Thorn against Flint.

Thorn directs his rodent side-kicks to kill Flint and steal his sword.

In the final battle between Flint and Thorn, Alex appears, and ends up fighting both Thorn’s minions, Crumbs and Nibbles. However, the clumsy Nibbles has taken a liking to Flint and tries to help him. The explorer and the dragon, Nicola and Spitfire, join in the fight by tricking Monkey-Wunkey, into becoming a spider and making a giant web. Flint loses his broadsword and gets his arm cut off. He becomes angry and kicks Thorn into the giant web. Thorn, who has a terror of spiders dies there and drags Monkey-Wunkey into the web too. Monkey-Wunkey is then killed on Thorn’s mighty electrostaff. Nibbles tries to get the broadsword back to Flint, but trips over and in doing so trips Alex over too.

This leaves an open route for Crumbs to kill Flint. Flint dies, and Crumbs goes for Alex. Alex is so sad about his father that he doesn’t care, but Spitfire the dragon jumps on Crumbs and pins him down, and Nicola threatens to kill Crumbs with her guns. They give Crumbs a chance to turn to the good side like the other minion Nibbles, but he shouts, “Never!!”

Amalthia sums up the good that has come out of this sad tale.
